BACKGROUND


Dr. Imtiaz Ahmad is a retired professor of Islamic Studies. He obtained his B.A., M.A. and LL.B. degrees from the reputed University of Allahabad, India. Here, at graduate level he obtained ‘Iqbal Gold Medal’ for standing first among Muslim candidates of B.A. and completed his Masters in Arabic with first position. He obtained his Ph.D. degree from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, UK in 1974.

He began his career as a Lecturer of Islamic Studies in the University of Karachi, Karachi, Pakistan in 1962. He taught there as Lecturer, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor from 1962 until 1993 and held the post of Dean, Faculty of Islamic Studies from 1982 to 1993. He was also the founder Director of Sheikh Zayed Islamic Centre, Karachi, Pakistan and held this post for a period of ten years. Then he proceeded to the University of Brunei, Brunei Darussalam, where he served as Associate Professor from August, 1993 till June, 2008 and held the administrative post of Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Usuluddin from January, 1997 to December, 1999 and also served as Head of the Department from January, 2003 to December, 2003.

Dr. Imtiaz chose Hadith as his specialized field of study.  He worked for his Ph.D. dissertation under the supervision of the renowned British scholar William Montgomery Watt, Professor Emeritus in the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, UK.

Dr. Imtiaz is competent in both modern and traditional disciplines of Islamic Studies. As such he possesses the degrees of B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. from reputed universities along with the Certificates of Maulvi, Alim and Ijazah fil hadith from religious institutions.

Born at Allahabad, India, in 1939, Dr. Imtiaz received his entire education, save his Ph.D., in his home town. All through his life he was attached to the teaching and research institutions, be it Central Institute of Islamic Research, Karachi, Sheikh Zayed Islamic Centre, Karachi, or University of Brunei, Brunei Darussalam. He contributed research articles in journals of national and international repute and attended international Conferences and Seminars at Jami’ Azhar, Cairo, Egypt; University of Cambridge, England; University of Musal, Iraq; University of Tunis, Tunisia; World’s Religions Conference, Istanbul, Turkey; National University, Malaysia; Universiti Brunei, Brunei Darussalam and Prince of Songkla University, Pattani, Thailand.

Dr. Imtiaz delivered a lecture on ‘Islam’ and attended Jewish - Muslim dialog in the Faculty of Divinity, University of Cambridge, Cambridge, England. He also gave lectures and conducted tutorials with the Arabic Honors class in the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, UK. Apart from his published articles in English, Arabic and Urdu in journals of national and International repute, his book entitled Dala’il at-Tawthiq al-Mubakkir lis Sunna wal Hadith was printed in Cairo in 1990.
